Where we are

Located in the village of Uppermill, Saddleworth: The Cyclery was established in May 2003 by Steve and Heather Penrice. Nestling on the western edge of England's Peak District National Park, about 10 miles (15 km) from Manchester, we are in a great location for road and mountain biking. We have approximately 700 feet of ascent and descent on our door step. If you are a road cyclist, there are some great hill climbs in and around Saddleworth. There is also the Manchester Velodrome within 15 miles.

If you have a mountain bike, then this is the place to be for great off-road descents and aggressive XC, with all that the weather can throw at you! We have it all!

What we offer

We cater for all cyclists – roadies to mountain bikers, leisure riders (including kids and families) to commuters and BMX’ers. Whether it's your first tentative purchase, or you're looking at a custom bike build, we can serve your needs. To complement our retail business we have a superbly staffed and thriving workshop to deal with a maintenance service, to solving specific mechanical issues. We also hold regular sales offers where you can pick up a bargain.

As we have a great community of local cyclists (and pubs after night rides!) we are constantly expanding the news section which will give you a flavour of what you are missing by not coming to visit us and sample the Saddleworth cycling terrain.

Who we are

Steve is the shop owner and leader of our merry band. Former owner of a textile business, he took the righteous path into the bike trade in 2003 and has never looked back. Steve is married with four kids, who are actively involved with cycling. Consequently he has approximately 8 minutes of free time each week, which he uses to practise wheelies on his latest custom creation.

Alex is a dyed-in-the-wool biker with many years experience in the cycle business. He currently holds a black belt in bicycle repair. Alex also looks after most of the ordering so if something is not in stock then…either blame him or get him to order it for you. Despite being dangerously close to 30, Alex still rides a kid's bike with 20-inch wheels (which he claims is a BMX) .To be fair, he is also an avid mountain biker and his Trek Remedy does get a regular thrashing.

Alistair (Al) is the newest member of the team. A 'Jack of All Trades' (and definitely master of none), Al is keen on most sports that require a helmet, including rock climbing, mountaineering and, of course, cycling. The constant helmet wearing could explain the lack of hair. Having left a career as an industrial chemist, Al now looks after the website and online shop. He can also be found in the shop where he is happiest discussing weird touring bikes or the finer points of nutrition for 100 mile rides.
